Verbal Memory — free online memory game
About this game
One word at a time appears on screen. Your only job: decide whether you have seen it before in this run. It starts easy and quietly becomes brutal as your list of remembered words grows into the hundreds.
Want your baseline first? Take the Verbal Memory Test — a 2–3 minute standardized version of this task with a population benchmark, then come back and train on it.
How to play Verbal Memory
- 1One word at a time.
- 2NEW = never shown this run. SEEN = it came up before.
- 33 mistakes end the run. Keyboard: N / S.
What Verbal Memory trains
This is a continuous recognition task — the lab version of verbal memory. You build a growing mental list of every word shown, then search it on every new word. Recognition memory is a different system from recall: stronger and more forgiving, but it still saturates, and watching where yours saturates is the point.

What is a good Verbal Memory score?
First runs usually land between 20 and 40 words. Scores above 60 mean you are not storing whole words but quick fingerprints — first letters, length, feel — which is a smarter, cheaper strategy your brain discovered on its own.
Why do I remember wrong words late in the run?
Because interference builds up: the more words you hold, the more they blur into each other. That interference is exactly what the task measures — and why pace matters. Answer deliberately, not instantly; one impulsive SEEN on a new word can end a strong run.
Is Verbal Memory free?
Yes — Verbal Memory is completely free, with no account, no signup and no downloads. Scores are saved privately in your browser, and you can install MemoryGames as an app from your browser menu if you want it on your home screen.
