Tone Memory — free online memory game
About this game
A tune plays — no positions to watch, no letters to read, just sound. Play it back on the keys, in order, and the melody grows by one note each level. Your ears are being tested now.
How to play Tone Memory
- 1A tune plays — notes only, no positions to watch.
- 2Tap the keys to play it back in the same order.
- 3Each level adds one note. One mistake ends the run.
What Tone Memory trains
Auditory working memory holds and replays sound — the skill behind learning melodies, languages and lectures. Because tones have no visual anchor, you lean on rehearsal and contour (up-down-up), the same cues musicians use to learn music by ear. Humming along gives your voice a second buffer, and it genuinely raises scores.
Category: Everyday memory · Scoring: Tones in tones
Tip: Hum the tune under your breath while it plays — your voice is a second buffer.
What is a good Tone Memory score?
Most players reach 6–9 notes. Musicians often go further because they chunk tones into intervals and phrases rather than individual notes — proof the chunking skill is universal, not visual.
Does this train musical ear?
It trains the memory side of a musical ear: holding a sequence of pitches long enough to reproduce it. Pitch naming is a separate, rarer skill (absolute pitch), but melodic recall is trainable in everyone.
Is Tone Memory free?
Yes — Tone Memory is completely free, with no account, no signup and no downloads. Scores are saved privately in your browser, and you can install MemoryGames as an app from your browser menu if you want it on your home screen.
